Painting around Ubud

Painting 30 murals and creating a solo exhibition in 2 months around the Ubud area, what a ride!

Bali Mural Artist Residency

Category: Street Art

Early on in my arts practice after feeling I had achieved all I could in Brisbane back in 2016 I decided to jump on a one way flight around the globe hunting for walls to paint where ever I could find them, spending as little as I could on accomodation and food was the goal in hopes to spend those saved funds on precious colours. Although at this point I had established myself in Queensland to a reasonable point of comfort I had no idea how much learning and development was to come, I really had no idea how amazing the next few years of my creative pursuit was going to be.

First landing in Ubud Bali with a bag packed full of bucket paint I painted my first mural at my place of accomodation and as soon as I put my bags down I rented my scooter and was off to hunt for more places to paint. After about three weeks and many murals/meeting of other interesting creatives I stumbled across an artist space “Cata Odata” where I explained what I was doing in the area and after we got to chatting we decided to build what became known as “Way Up” a mural artist residency project where I painted 30 murals, 20 independently and 10 collaboratively with local artist I met along the way.

The mission began for finding 30 walls! The painting came easy but to get these walls locked in with a language barrier led me to some pretty interesting interactions to say the least but all in all with gifts given, drinks shared and a few smiles we managed to lock in and execute all the walls, we later than created a scavenger hunt map with the goal being getting an image standing in front of each and everyone and a young artist on the day collected all 30 winning a original painting at the project launching exhibition and event.

30 murals, a solo exhibition, a group exhibition, workshops, artists talks, spilt paint, sketchy scooters… What an experience to say the least.

Shout out to all the collaborating artists: Slinat, Lezart, Neds, Bombdalove, Peanutdog, 1escv, Sleeck, Yaps, 1escv & Kmis3
