Whitehorse Public Toilet Block Mural Featuring Australian Wildlife
Transforming a Public Facility With Colourful Street Art
Commissioned by the City of Whitehorse, this mural transformed a public toilet block into a colourful feature celebrating Australian wildlife. The design brings together vibrant abstract floral shapes and two native birds, an Eastern Rosella and a Blue Wren, creating a balance between realistic animal imagery and expressive street art.
Rather than treating the building as an ordinary utility structure, I used the mural to give the space a stronger visual identity. Bold black outlines and flowing background shapes guide the eye from one side of the building to the other, connecting the composition into a continuous artwork.
Realistic Native Birds Meet Bold Abstract Design
The Eastern Rosella and Blue Wren were painted using realistic spray-paint techniques, giving the birds detail and character against the more imaginative background. Vibrant floral-inspired forms and strong outlines bring energy to the overall composition, while the native birds provide a natural focal point.
I enjoy working on unconventional public spaces that might otherwise be overlooked or seen as eyesores. With the right concept, colour palette and composition, even everyday infrastructure can become an engaging part of the local environment.
