Turning a Bold Yellow Wall Into a Regional Mural Landmark

Created as part of my six-month full-time mural artist contract with Wodonga City Council in 2021–2022, Sun Daze became one of ten murals I delivered across the city. The project began with a bright yellow building exterior that had divided local opinion when it was first painted. Over time, the colour became part of the building's identity, and I saw an opportunity to embrace it rather than tone it down.

My concept was to paint an oversized sunflower that celebrated the existing yellow while giving the building a fresh sense of purpose and personality. Positioned near a roundabout, the site also needed a design that would catch the eye of passing traffic and draw attention towards the business's entrance. I incorporated my signature flowing street art patterns around the flower and towards the front door, connecting the bold central image with the architecture of the building.

From a Controversial Colour to a Much-Loved Local Artwork

The clients were initially hesitant about the concept, having experienced mixed reactions to the building's bright exterior in the past. After discussing the design and explaining how the sunflower would build on the existing colour, they decided to go ahead. The finished mural transformed the wall into a striking feature, and Sun Daze has since become one of Wodonga's recognisable murals, attracting attention through media coverage, online features and conversations with locals.

For me, this project is a great example of how a well-considered mural can turn an existing feature into something a community embraces. Rather than starting from scratch, I worked with the building's history, colour and location to create artwork that felt connected to its surroundings while still making a bold statement.
