Youth Group Piano Mural Project

A Collaborative Public Art Project With Young Artists

Before returning to Australia, I was commissioned by North Vancouver City Council to create an interactive, Monster Mash-inspired piano mural and install it directly outside the council headquarters.

The project formed part of Studio In The City 10, an eight-week public art program where I taught eight young artists the skills and processes needed to develop and deliver work as professional public artists. Rather than simply teaching them how to paint, the program introduced them to the creative, practical and collaborative side of working in public spaces.

The painted piano became an interactive artwork for the community, combining vibrant characters, bold street art and hands-on participation. The program ultimately led into Fun Alley, North Vancouver's largest mural artwork, giving the young artists an opportunity to put what they had learned into practice on a much larger public art project.

Although this project was completed in North Vancouver, Canada, it remains an important part of my experience delivering youth art programs, collaborative murals and council-led public art projects. I now bring that experience to schools, councils and community organisations across Melbourne, regional Victoria and Australia.
