Transforming Temporary Seating Into Colourful Public Art
Moorabool Shire Council approached me to transform a set of temporary parklets and public seating areas that were being installed throughout the community. With just one day to paint both spaces, I developed a flowing design that could be applied quickly while still feeling considered, site-specific and visually strong.
Rather than treating the seating as something separate from its surroundings, I used flowing shapes, linework and simplified plant forms inspired by the local environment to create artwork that worked with the existing landscape. Selective use of natural greens and browns allowed the artwork to complement the surrounding greenery while giving otherwise functional infrastructure a much stronger visual identity.
Making Melbourne's Public Spaces More Interesting Through Art
Projects like this show how murals and public art can improve everyday usable spaces, not just large blank walls. Seating, parklets, concrete structures, pathways and other pieces of public infrastructure can all become opportunities to introduce colour, movement and visual interest into a community.
My approach draws heavily from my street art practice, using bold flowing linework, organic shapes and carefully selected colour to make ordinary spaces feel more considered and engaging. I enjoy finding the potential in the boring or overlooked parts of a streetscape and turning them into something people actually want to interact with.
I work with Melbourne councils, businesses and community organisations to develop colourful public art that responds to its surroundings while giving functional spaces a distinctive identity.
