Murray Cod: Vibrant Australian Fish Mural in Wodonga
A Large-Scale Public Art Mural Celebrating the Murray River
Inspired by the iconic Murray Cod, this mural celebrates one of the most recognisable fish associated with the Murray River region. Painted in Wodonga, the artwork brings local wildlife into the urban environment through my distinctive blend of vibrant street art, flowing patterns and psychedelic-inspired visuals.
The Murray Cod is known for its impressive size and importance to the region's waterways. I wanted to create something that honoured this much-loved fish while moving beyond traditional wildlife imagery. The result is a large-scale mural built around an oversized hero image, using bold colour and expressive linework to give the fish a striking presence.
Realistic Details Meet Psychedelic Street Art
The mural combines different styles of patternwork to create contrast and movement across the composition. Intricate details define the fins, while flowing shapes and luminous areas move through the background to complement the central fish. Simpler linework across flatter areas of colour creates the suggestion of wild scales, adding texture without competing with the main subject.
This balance between detailed imagery and imaginative abstraction is central to my approach to wildlife murals. Recognisable Australian animals provide a strong focal point, while expressive street art patterns give each artwork its own character.
As the first mural in a series of ten public artworks created in Wodonga, Murray Cod was an important starting point for the wider project. The community response was warmly positive, and the mural later received coverage on Channel 7 and Channel 9 news and became part of the town's Upstream Festival.
