A Collaborative School Mural Designed With Students
This school mural in Wodonga, Victoria was created with students from Melrose Primary School, giving them the opportunity to help shape the artwork and then bring the finished design to life alongside Melbourne mural artist Lukas Kasper.
The school provided a broad theme centred around acceptance, kindness, togetherness and positive values, and the students were encouraged to interpret these ideas through their own words, drawings and visual concepts. Their ideas became the foundation for the final mural design.
Throughout the creative process, several recurring themes emerged, including lightbulbs, candles, hands, flowers, bees, rainbows, love hearts and positive words. I brought these individual ideas together into a cohesive mural concept that could be painted by students of different ages and abilities while still creating a strong finished artwork for the school.
The final mural was painted collaboratively over three days, with students taking an active role in the painting process. This approach gives students more than just the opportunity to watch a professional artist at work. They become part of the artwork itself, learning about mural painting, colour, composition and large-scale public art while creating something they can see and enjoy around their school every day.

A School Mural Students Can Take Ownership Of
One of my favourite parts of running school mural programs is seeing the personal connections that develop throughout the project. During this mural, several young students who were particularly interested in art asked for advice about their own creative work. At the end of the project, some even gave me artwork they had created themselves as a thank-you.
These moments are a big part of why I enjoy working with schools. A collaborative mural can become more than a colourful feature wall. It can give students the confidence to share their ideas, try something unfamiliar and see their own contribution become part of a permanent artwork.
