How Much Does a Mural Cost in 2026?
Asking how much a mural costs is a bit like asking how long a piece of string is. Every wall, brief and site is different, so there’s no single price. What I can do is explain exactly what changes the cost, so you know what to expect before you ask for a quote.
The short answer
My murals start from $1,000 + GST. That’s where the smallest, simplest jobs sit, and from there the price follows the wall.
The things that move it are how big the wall is, whether it’s flat or textured, whether it’s already primed, whether it’s brick (and how deep the grout lines are), how much prep it needs, whether I need a boom lift to reach it, and what you’d like painted on it.
A small, flat, primed wall at ground level sits at the lower end. A large, tall, textured wall that needs heavy prep and a boom lift sits much higher, and there’s no fixed ceiling: it can go as high as its size takes it.
A easy way to picture it
Lower Budget
A small wall, smooth and flat, already primed, reachable from the ground, with a simple brief and room for creative freedom.
Higher Budget
Closer to the higher end: a large wall, tall enough for a boom lift, raw or deep-grout brick, needing washing and priming, with a detailed brief such as logos and lots of elements to fit in.
If you’re not sure which end your wall sits at, that’s what the quote is for. Send me a few photos and rough measurements and I’ll tell you what’s involved. It’s free, with no obligation to book.
What Affects the Cost of a Mural?
These are the things I look at first when I’m working out a quote.
The size of the wall
Bigger walls take more paint and more days on site. Area isn’t the whole story, though. A wall full of windows and doors can have less to paint but take longer, because of all the cutting in around them.
Inside or outside
Outdoor walls face sun, wind and rain, so they need exterior-grade paint and can lose days to weather. Indoors, I’m protecting floors and furniture and working around the people who use the space.
The surface: flat, rendered or brick
A smooth, flat wall is the quickest to paint, and render is usually straightforward when it’s in good condition. Brick is where it varies. Raw, unpainted brick is thirsty: it soaks up paint and needs sealing or priming first. Deep grout lines take more time again, because the surface is uneven and fine detail is harder to hold.

Is it primed, and does it need washing?
A clean, primed wall means I can start painting straight away. If a wall is very dirty, it may need a pressure wash and some prep first, and if so, I include it in your quote. Most walls only need light prep, which I cover free of charge.
Height and access
If I can reach the whole wall from the ground, it’s a simpler job. Taller walls need a boom lift, scaffold or ladders, which means equipment hire, setup and extra safety planning, and wind can stop work for a day.

The design and the brief
This is the one people don’t expect. Painting something with plenty of creative freedom is a very different job from working to a detailed brief. A corporate project, with logo adaptations and lots of elements to fit in and get exactly right, takes more design time and more care on the wall than a mural where I’m trusted to run with an idea. I take on both kinds of project, so I price each one for what it involves.
Location and timing
Where the wall is and when it needs finishing count too: travel, overnight stays and tight deadlines all affect the quote.
Same Size, Very Different Jobs
Here are two murals that look to be the same but the reality of the cost was substantially different.
Surface Condition:
Underpass mural on a surface that was clean and primed ready for painting
Brief:
Colourful, fun and inviting with artistic creative freedom after sending through a detailed example of my previous works to inform the concept design
Surface Condition:
Underpass mural on a surface that had years of mould build up and was painted unprofessionally in areas from covering graffiti causing flaking paint that needed scraped and re prep’d
Brief:
Requires a parkland site visit to get inspiration from local species of animals and environment and to integrate into the mural through spray paint realism
