Vibrant Large-Scale Underpass Mural in Regional Victoria

A Large-Scale Public Art Project in Wodonga

Between 2021 and 2022, I undertook a six-month full-time mural artist contract with Wodonga City Council, delivering a series of public art projects throughout the city. The role involved managing each project from the ground up, including concept development, design, permits, project paperwork, approvals, paint sourcing, preparation and the mural painting itself. One of these projects was “Fun In The Sun”, a large-scale mural transforming the Baranduda Underpass into a vibrant piece of public art. It became one of 10 murals I created across Wodonga during the contract, giving me valuable experience delivering multiple large-scale mural projects within a regional Victorian city.

The Baranduda Underpass was originally a fairly uninviting space, with mud and grime covering the walls and wasps occupying parts of the tunnel. I wanted to completely change that experience, using my background in street art and large-scale mural painting to create something colourful, playful and full of movement. The artwork runs through the entire underpass, incorporating love hearts, flowers, eyes, stairs and flowing shapes into one continuous visual environment. The result transformed an overlooked piece of infrastructure into a bright and energetic public artwork for the local community, while demonstrating how large-scale murals can bring character and identity to regional spaces.
