School Mural Painted In Regional Victoria By Students
Led By Local Artist Lukas Kasper
This project is a great example of the impact public art can have in regional schools and communities, particularly when students are given the opportunity to contribute to a large-scale artwork and learn new creative techniques along the way.
The mural was developed collaboratively with students and teachers, drawing inspiration from the local flora and fauna found around the school's rivers, waterways and surrounding green spaces. After exploring a range of ideas, the students and school identified three key local animals to feature in the artwork: a kookaburra, frog and duck.
I then transformed these ideas into a visual narrative that was engaging and achievable for students across different ages and skill levels. The design process allowed the students to see their ideas develop from the initial concepts through to digital sketches and the final colour artwork before taking part in painting the mural themselves.
My background in graphic design and large-scale mural design allows me to create school mural concepts that are visually strong while remaining flexible enough to involve an entire class. Different design options can be explored during the digital sketching stage before the final composition is established and a structured painting program is developed for students.
Collaboration Is Key
Through my school mural programs, I aim to find the balance between creating an impressive finished artwork and making sure every student has a genuine opportunity to contribute. The design needs to be simple enough for students of different ages and abilities to participate, while still resulting in a professional-quality mural that the school and wider community can enjoy for years to come.
This project demonstrates how a collaborative school mural can combine local environment, student creativity and professional public art, creating an artwork that belongs to the whole school community.
