Project Overview
When the Brimbank City Council looked to revitalize an aging, heavily deteriorated fence at the Sydenham Basin Reserve, they envisioned more than just a simple repair. Located in Melbourne’s western suburbs, this popular off-leash dog park serves as a vibrant community hub for local residents and their four-legged companions.
To turn a structural eyesore into a striking landmark, they commissioned a custom public artwork. As an artist passionate about animals and the local landscape, bringing this vision to life was an incredible opportunity to merge community storytelling with vibrant placemaking.
Key Themes and Inspiration
The design process was deeply rooted in the unique natural and social ecosystem of Melbourne's west. Every brushstroke was guided by three core pillars:
Local Flora and Waterways: The mural heavily incorporates indigenous plant life and subtle nods to the surrounding water basin, grounding the artwork in the authentic geography of the Brimbank area.
Celebrating Our Canine Friends: As a dedicated off-leash dog park, the reserve is defined by its energetic animal visitors. The mural features portraits of some of the most common and beloved dog breeds seen frequenting the park daily.
Placemaking in Melbourne’s West: The project aimed to reflect the warmth, diversity, and active lifestyle of the western suburbs community, turning a neglected utility fence into a major feature of the parkland.
Bringing the Vision to Life
Revitalizing public infrastructure requires careful planning and a deep respect for the environment. Working on-site at the Sydenham Basin Reserve meant interacting daily with the very community the artwork was created for.
The Design Process
Researching Local Biodiversity: Collaborating with stakeholders to identify key indigenous plants that represent the Brimbank region.
Characterising Local Pets: Spotlighting actual local dogs to give the mural a personal, community-driven touch that local pet owners would instantly recognise and love.
The Community Response
The reception from the Brimbank community has been overwhelmingly positive. Dog walkers, families, and local residents have truly embraced the colorful transformation, watching the dreary old fence evolve into a vibrant focal point that brightens up every visit to the park.
For me, this project was deeply personal. As a proud mural artist based right here in Melbourne's west, and with Brimbank City Council being my local council, painting in my own backyard carries a unique kind of weight and pride. Add in the fact that I'm a massive dog lover, and bringing this space to life felt less like a standard commission and more like a labor of love for my own community. Seeing the local dogs stop to inspect the wall, and watching how the vibrant outcome has injected new energy into the reserve, is something I am genuinely proud of.

Public art shouldn't just sit quietly in the background—it has to reflect the actual people, pets, and landscapes that give a place its pulse.
