Art Agitators
A unique project comes to Lightning Ridge
Lightning Ridge Art Agitators Project
As a Melbourne mural artist, I recently traded the city streets for the red dust of Outback New South Wales. I was incredibly honored to be invited by the legendary John Murray Art Gallery to participate in the Art Agitators project, a massive public art initiative that is quickly becoming one of the biggest tourist attractions in Lightning Ridge.
This unique project breathes new life into authentic pieces of Australian mining history. John Murray has invited a collective of artists to paint 20 historic concrete agitators—the giant spinning drums historically used by miners to wash clay and dirt in the hunt for elusive Black Opal.
My Mural on the Yellow Car Door Tour
If you are traveling through the Outback, you can see my finished piece proudly displayed outside the Opal Miners Hall of Fame. This site is a major landmark located along the famous Yellow Car Door Tour, making it an essential pitstop for tourists exploring the region.
Painting on a canvas that is so deeply rich in local history was an incredible experience. These agitators symbolize the grit, hope, and determination of the opal mining community, and transforming one into a vibrant outdoor masterpiece was a true privilege.
The Story Behind the Yabby Design
For my agitator, I wanted to paint something that resonated deeply with the locals while capturing the natural beauty of the area. I landed on a bold, vibrant Yabby theme.
Yabbying is a beloved local pastime in the Ridge, but these fierce, armored little creatures also hold a visual secret. Their iridescent blues and earthy shells instantly reminded me of the mesmerizing colors found inside a raw Black Opal. By wrapping a giant, colorful yabby around the spinning drum of the agitator, I wanted to connect the community's love for the land with the treasures hidden beneath it.
