Connecting Culture Through Art
Working with Myanmar Community To Create A Long Standing Public Artwork
Community Murals Melbourne - Interactive & Culturally Inclusive Public Art
Category: Community Murals
Painting & Planning With The Community
This mural project was a truly collaborative experience, created alongside members of the Myanmar community who shared their cultural stories and creative inspiration throughout the process. Together, we explored traditional motifs and symbols that reflected their heritage and values, using these ideas to guide the overall design. The project encouraged hands-on participation — with community members joining in to help paint sections of the mural and add their own unique touches.
This interactive element transformed the experience into more than just an artwork; it became a shared celebration of culture, creativity, and connection. The launch event was equally special, featuring live bands from Myanmar backgrounds and a group painting session that brought people of all ages together to contribute to the final piece.
The Mural Outcome & Collaborators
Painted in a prime location outside Eastland Shopping Centre in Civic Place, Ringwood, this large-scale mural stands as a vibrant symbol of unity and cultural pride. Inspired by the Myanmar community’s traditions and visual language, the artwork weaves together themes of belonging, diversity, and togetherness. Created in collaboration with YSAS, Foundation House, Victorian Youth Fest, Maroondah City Council, and the Migrant Information Centre, the mural showcases how art can bridge communities and inspire inclusion. Designed to last for many years to come, it serves not only as a colourful public artwork but also as a lasting reminder of what can be achieved when communities come together through creativity.
