Westvale Community Centre Mural Painted With a Youth Group
An Interactive Community Mural Celebrating Local Environment and Community
Commissioned by Brimbank City Council, this mural at Westvale Community Centre began with a collaborative brainstorming and sketching session alongside five young artists. To give the project a clear direction while leaving room for individual creativity, I introduced the theme of the local environment and invited the group to share the places, natural features and ideas they felt represented their community.
From there, I brought their suggestions together with my own concepts to develop a cohesive mural design that could tell a broader story about the area. The challenge was to combine a range of different ideas into one artwork while making sure the young artists could still recognise their own contributions in the finished piece. The result was a colourful, community-driven mural that connects the local environment with the people who live there, giving the community centre a distinctive artwork shaped by the voices of its younger generation.

An Artist-Led Mural Project Designed for Young Artists to Take Part
A key part of this project was making sure the young artists could contribute beyond the initial concept stage. Once the design was finalised, I broke sections of the mural down into accessible shapes and areas that the group could confidently paint themselves. This allowed the participants to move from sharing ideas on paper to physically helping bring those ideas to life on the wall.
As a working mural artist, I guided the process and helped the group work together to create a unified final artwork, while leaving room for them to experience the practical side of making public art. Seeing their original ideas become part of a permanent mural was an incredibly rewarding part of the project.
Projects like this demonstrate how artist-led mural programs can give young people an opportunity to explore creativity, develop practical skills and contribute something lasting to their local area. I enjoy working with councils, schools, youth groups and community organisations across Melbourne’s western suburbs to deliver collaborative murals that bring people together and make public spaces more engaging.
