Galah Mural Under William Street Bridge
A Council-Commissioned Public Art Mural in Wodonga
Commissioned by Wodonga City Council as part of a six-month, full-time mural artist residency in 2021–2022, Sticky Beak transformed the underside of William Street Bridge into a vibrant public artwork for a newly developed walking and cycling route. The mural was one of ten large-scale artworks I created during the residency, which involved managing projects from initial concepts and approvals through to preparation, materials, permits and painting.
The underpass sits along a scenic route connecting people with Wodonga’s town centre, passing rivers, trees and areas rich in native flora and fauna. After researching the surrounding environment, I developed a concept combining the cheeky Galahs found in the area with bright pink flowers, bringing local wildlife into a space used by pedestrians and cyclists.
Combining Realistic Wildlife With Imaginative Street Art
The centrepiece is a large-scale Galah, painted with realistic detail to give the bird a strong presence beneath the bridge. Around it, expressive flowers, flowing shapes and intricate street art patterns create a more imaginative visual landscape, balancing natural realism with my distinctive street art style.
The design was created to reward people experiencing the mural from different distances. From further along the pathway, the Galah draws the eye across the underpass. Up close, the flowers reveal smaller details, including eyes with reflections of the local surroundings, alongside patterns and shapes woven throughout the composition. These details add depth and curiosity to an otherwise functional piece of infrastructure.
Sticky Beak demonstrates how council-commissioned public art can do more than decorate a structure. By combining large-scale wildlife imagery with colourful, imaginative design, the mural helps turn an underpass into a memorable part of Wodonga’s public space.
