Large-Scale Youth Mural Project in North Vancouver
A Collaborative Public Art Project With Young Artists
Fun Alley was the final project of an eight-week youth public art program I taught through Studio In The City, a City of North Vancouver youth employment program supporting young people aged 15–19 through hands-on experience in the arts.
I worked with eight young artists, teaching them how to approach public art and mural projects from concept through to completion. The program focused on practical mural-making skills, creative collaboration and showing young people how their artwork could make a positive contribution to their community.
Although the program was delivered in North Vancouver, Canada, it became an important part of my experience working with youth and delivering council-supported public art programs. I now bring that experience into school mural programs, youth workshops and community mural projects across Melbourne, regional Victoria and Australia.
Transforming a Neglected Alleyway Through Public Art
The final project was a large-scale laneway mural designed to transform a neglected alleyway into a vibrant community space. Working alongside the young artists, we developed and painted the artwork across the space, turning an overlooked area into a destination for public art and community interaction.
The project grew well beyond the original expectations, becoming one of North Vancouver's best-known mural locations and demonstrating what can happen when youth development, community participation and large-scale mural art are brought together.
This project remains a strong example of my ability to deliver large-scale community murals, youth art programs and council-led public art projects, from teaching and mentoring through to the final artwork.
